Reddit, a popular website with pages for nearly every interest on the planet, is a fantastic source for artistic ideas and inspiration. One page that I particularly enjoy is Design Porn. Welcome here are images of “interesting designs, including architectural, graphic, industrial, furniture & product design.” Users post daily with intriguing and clever graphic designs they have encountered, which serve as a great source of inspiration for other graphic designers. Five hours ago, for example, the following image of a newly published book cover was posted:
Regardless of your political views, it’s undeniable that this graphic design is incredibly clever. The image simultaneously conveys the image of Donald Trump as well as a nation ablaze, which is presumably “what the Trump administration is doing to America.”
The following Chinese book is another favorite of mine:
In Chinese, the symbol for person is 人, and the symbol for tree is 木. I think the minimalist visualization of these symbols is very clever and well designed, especially for a book that claims to making learning Chinese easy.
A final example of the types of pieces you can find on Design Porn is the following Lego advertisement:
I really like how this simple design conveys the power of imagination and represents how children interact with Legos.
Reddit’s Design Porn page is chock-full of gorgeous designs and is a great resource for artistic inspiration. I hope to use what I learn in class to create equally impressive designs in the future!
