Music videos are always such an intriguing form of art because they seamlessly integrate music and visual art into one moving piece. One music video that has always stood out to me and that I always find myself thinking about is Coldplay’s video for “Up and Up“, directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia.
The video is a 4 minute long montage of short clips consisting of parts of 2 or 3 photos/videos clipped on to one another. one is designed to subvert expectations and make you think twice about what you’re seeing, which is something I always find highly valuable in art. Alexandra Jardine from Creativity-Online aptly dubs this video a “Surrealist Visual Feast”.
The gif above features a few of my favorite clips from the video. I particularly love the clip of the astronauts diving into the spaghetti–there’s just something so unexpected and whimsical about that decision that always leaves a smile on my face.
