The Hirshhorn’s Big Man

If you asked me to name what first comes to mind when I hear the word “art” a few years ago, I might have mentioned something about the gorgeous classical nudes of Ancient Greece, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, or some other famed artwork. I likely would have mentioned something I find beautiful, something highly idealized. If you ask me to name what first comes to mind when I heard the word “art” now, I think of Ron Mueck’s Untitled (Big Man), a seven-foot tall grotesquely realistic sculpture who welcomes you at the Hirshhorn Museum with his “physical presence, fleshiness, and weight.”
